Three Most Important Wiccan Beliefs You Need to Know

Contrary to what most people think about Wicca and witchcraft, Wiccan belief promotes peace, harmony and balanced way of life. In this entry, we will talk about some of the most common Wiccan beliefs that prove this way of living is NOT what the majority of the society thinks it is.

‘An it Harm None, Do What Thou Wilt’

This is the most basic principle (Rede or rule) of Wiccan belief, which says ‘as long as it doesn’t harm anyone, including yourself, do as you please’. Of course, there are many interpretations of as what it really means “harm”, and it may be confusing from time to time. But the principle is simple – everyone is responsible for his or her actions and intentions, this includes the spoken words, actions. Everyone is free to do what they wish to do with this framework.

This brings us to the other two important beliefs of Wiccan – Karma and the Threefold Return.

Karma and Threefold Return

The belief of Karma and Threefold Return works hand in hand in Wiccan belief. We know Karma from Hinduism and Buddhism, which is defined as the deciding fate of the future existences of a person’s actions in present and previous states of existence. In Wiccan religion, Karma is the universe’s manifestations of its law, in action. And that whatever we do, good or bad, will get back to us threefold.

Karma is NOT defined as punishment, rather, it is the nature’s way of balancing out the things we have earned. This is very similar to the saying “what comes around, goes around”, and the teaching from the Bible “as you sow, so shall you reap.” This means we are all bound to return good with good, and bad with bad.

Being Responsible for Your Own Actions

This also includes how one should live his or her life and react to the things that happen to his or her life. Part of which is from the credence that we are the one who choose our lives and the circumstances that comes to us (that includes our parents as well) before we are put into this world, so we will have the chance to learn the most important lessons of life that our soul wishes to learn in our incarnation. In that regard, Wiccans believe that people are here in this world not just to exist, but to learn, grow, love and be happy throughout the way.

Contrary to what many people think, Wiccans don’t worship the devil, as a matter of fact, they don’t believe in the traditional definition of devil – it is NOT the one responsible for the wrong things people do. They also don’t believe that by simply saying “sorry”, everything will be better.Rather, they believe that the best way to amend harm is to acknowledge the mistake and ask people how to make it up to them.

These are just three of the many core beliefs in Wiccan tradition. Wiccans also believe in the reincarnation (in some form, not just as humans), duality of deity, sacredness of life, reverence and mirth, and honoring the Sabbaths.
